Whenever I used to visit my grandma I would always play with the girls next door. I was 6 years old then, but growing up I found out they were foster care children. I wondered what made them so different from me. We wore the same clothes and laughed at the same jokes, yet only later did I learn about the hardships they had faced. In the eighth grade I was doing a project for school when we came to the topic of foster care. I was intrigued, and through lots of research while keeping my friends in mind, realized I wanted to make an impact. If I have the resources to help improve even just one child’s future, why don’t I? Children in Foster Care face more difficulty when it comes to school work, due to disruptive learning, unstable living conditions, lack of progression in support systems, misunderstanding from teachers, limited access to educational resources, etc. All of this leads to lower graduation rates contrasted to their peers. This causes a domino effect, later affecting them to less opportunities as they continue to grow. I believe we can make a change in small steps, starting with education.

At Educate Beyond, we are a dedicated nonprofit committed to making books, backpacks and school supplies accessible to children in foster care. Our team is made up of educators, caregivers, students, and community members who are creating a network of support, where every book and backpack is a step toward self-discovery.
